Dear Officer:
At this time,
we would like to remind all of our locals about the necessity and
benefits of retaining "Good Standing" status with AFT. AFT
is in the early stages of implementing recent constitutional mandates
for good standing with AFT. According to language approved
in the 2004 AFT Bylaws, Article X, titled, "Good Standing,"
for an affiliate to be in good standing, it must meet
all of the following requirements:
·
Payment of per capita to the AFT on all
members, with arrears not to exceed two months, and to the applicable
state federation consistent with its constitution.
· Current in submission of the
affiliate's annual audit or financial review in keeping with Sections
1 and 2 of Article IX of the AFT bylaws. (Audits
are due to the AFT no later than six months following the close
of your union's fiscal year.)
· Current in submission to the
AFT of names and addresses for the principal executive and financial
officers.
· Current in submission to the
AFT of the names and addresses of current members of the affiliate's
executive board. For many affiliates, this is the
only area of non-compliance. Still, it must be completed
for your local to maintain good standing.
·
Current in submission of a membership
roster; and
·
Current in submission of a copy of the
affiliate's up-to-date constitution.
Failure to
submit any one of the above mentioned items will result
in a "bad standing" status for your local. Remember, only
locals that are in good standing can obtain organizational
assistance from AFT, can access Defense Fund and Militancy Fund
grants, can participate in occupational and accident insurance programs,
or receive coverage under the AFT Union Officials Liability insurance
policy. Additionally, an affiliate must be in good standing
in order for its delegates to be seated at the AFT Convention.
Over the next several weeks, we will be reviewing the materials
submitted by our affiliates, after which we will advise you of your
status.
Please share
this letter with the person in your local who is responsible for
submitting the required membership and/or financial information
to AFT. I respectfully request that you provide the above
information to the AFT without delay.
Executive
Board updates and membership rosters can be submitted via hard copy
(see enclosed Officers Report) or by accessing AFT's online tools.
