IN APPRECIATION OF
CHILD NUTRITION WORKERS
Some of our
best memories of school take place in the school cafeteria. We can
still taste delicious peanut butter cookies, turkey and potatoes
smothered in gravy during Thanksgiving week, and the staples: hamburgers,
Tater Tots and french fries, pizza and chicken nuggets. We also
remember the women who worked in the cafeteria who would never you
let go hungry, even if you lost your lunch money. They always had
a friendly smile, encouraged you to eat vegetables and congratulated
you when you got good grades.
What we didn't
realize was how hard cafeteria employees work and the conditions
they work under. They prepare menus and meals, clean pots and pans,
utensils, tables and the food line. They also lift heavy boxes and
get cuts and burns from hot ovens and steam tables, sometimes serious
ones. Cafeteria workers sometimes cover more than one job because
they are short-staffed. Yet, they provide students with nourishing
meals that fuel growing bodies and help students succeed academically.
Caring, trained,
thoughtful, dedicated and professional are some of the words that
describe today's child nutrition workers. The School Nutrition Association
has set the week of May 2-6 as Child Nutrition Employee Appreciation
Week to remind everyone of the role that child nutrition workers
play in the lives of our children. This special week also lets cafeteria
workers know that we are thinking about them and how much we appreciate
them. Â For more information, visit http://www.schoolnutrition.org/Index.aspx?id=60

A PSRP "three
cheers and "thank you" to all child nutrition employees!
