NATIONAL
SCHOOL LUNCH WEEK
Memories of school are incomplete without memories of school lunch.
We all had some favorite food or a particular day that a meal we
really liked was served, making lunchtime a much-anticipated event.
National School Lunch Week provides the opportunity to reminisce
about school lunches and showcase our menus. The National School
Lunch Program was established in 1946 and provides nutritious lunches
that help the 28 million students who partake daily to achieve academic
success by nourishing their bodies and minds.
National School Lunch Week was established by a proclamation from
President Kennedy. This year it is celebrated Oct. 10-16 and the
theme is "School Lunch—It's Instrumental!" The week
helps raise awareness of and garner support for the role that school
food service and nutrition programs play in the lives of American
children.
Go to http://www.schoolnutrition.org/nslw/ for a tool kit, brochures,
menus and other material to help you have a festive National School
Lunch Week celebration and get the word out about the important
role school lunches play in our children's upbringing. The weeklong
celebration is made possible by the Otis Spunkmeyer Co. and the
School Nutrition Association, which is devoted solely to protecting
and enhancing children's health and well-being through school meals
and sound nutrition education.
A PSRP "three cheers and thank you" to all school food
service workers who make the school lunch program successful!
