PRESS RELEASE
New Hampshire Federation
of Teachers Stand in Solidarity with the Boston Teachers'
Union
Bow, NH, March 12, 2004
:
The New Hampshire Federation of Teachers
Executive Board announces their support for the Boston Teachers'
Union in their efforts to achieve a fair and reasonable
contract. The members of the Boston Teachers' Union have
been without a contract since August 2003. The NHFT urges
the Mayor of Boston and elected leaders to support their
schools and the dedicated teachers and staff by resolving
the contract dispute. "Teachers in Boston and elsewhere
are in the front lines ever day yet when it comes time to
negotiate reasonable terms and conditions of employment,
they are left behind time after time" according to NHFT
Vice-President John Stewart. "We urge Mayor Thomas Menino
to step up to the plate and treat the teachers in Boston
with the respect and dignity they deserve."
Stewart recently wrote
to BTU President Richard Stutman, " On behalf of the New
Hampshire Federation of Teachers, we would like to let you
know that we stand in solidarity with your efforts and offer
our assistance if you need it."
The City of Boston has also failed to extend
fair treatment to the police and fire unions in labor matters
over the past year. The Keene Police Officers' Association,
a NHFT local, has also extended their support to the Boston
Patrolmen's Association in their efforts to finalize their
contract according to Stewart who is also President of the
Keene Police Officers' Association.
The New Hampshire
Federation of Teachers is the AFT State Federation in
New Hampshire and represents over 3,000 teachers, paraprofessionals,
public employees, school support staff and police officers
in New Hampshire with the e largest local being in Nashua
, NH .
